Luke nodded, listening as she spoke. He figured the locket would probably have some sort of significance, seeing as she pretty much never took it off. "I'm sorry," he said, rubbing her shoulder gently, he hadn't meant to make her emotional, bring up any upsetting memories. He held the locket between his thumb and his forefinger, peering at the photo inside. "You look at lot like her," he smiled.
Luke had never actually known either sets of his grandparents, but he had enough family around him to make up for that fact. He really needed to draw up a family tree some day to figure out how many of them there actually were. He knew he was the oldest of all the kids, but some of his cousins had already had children, extending the family even further. At least he wasn't an Uncle yet, and he hoped not to be for a long time.
"I've never really been given anything by my family," he said, "trinkets and what not. But," he trailed off for a moment, reaching into his pocket to pull out his wallet, pulling something out from one of the pockets inside, showing it to Ally, "I do have a wristband, from when my Mom went into the hospital for her cancer. She carries around the one I had on my wrist when I was in the hospital after I was born. It's sort of a connection thing, no matter where we are, we'll always have something of each other with us." It was a ridiculously mushy thing for a guy to do, but only he and his Mom knew they did it, until now.

'No, no it's okay she died years ago." Ally forced a half smile, reminding herself that life kept on going. 'It's just nice remembering her." That much at least was true, and in truth, she really did miss her grandmother. The women in her family had always been close, while the men all seemed like another universe entirely. Luke would certainly change that cursed tradition. 'Thanks." she whispered softly, feeling her stomach flutter again. That was probably the best compliment he could've given her, considering her grandmother had been her most favourite being in all of existence, an she definitely looked up to the woman's inner beauty.
Luke spoke again, pulling out a leather wristband to show her. She smiled genuinely, running her fingertips along the form of the band. She smiled sweetly at him, honoured that he would open up like this. Men just didn't do this sort of thing, not unless they were stupidly in love or serious. He seemed both, which was a mix of comfort and unceretainty. She had never fell in love this hard, or this serious, and part of her was completely terrified of the notion. And yet, she hadn't looked at another man, or thought about another after Luke. It was like he was the only one that mattered and everything else just blurred away.
Her mind ran back to what he had just said about being connected to his mother. Come to think of it, she had nothing tangible with Luke, at least not yet. Wedding rings would (hopefully) happen in the future, but what about the here and the now? She heaved a small sigh and wiggled her favourite opal ring from her finger, placing it in the palm of his hand. She wrapped his fingers around it tightly, just so he wouldn't drop it. No, it wouldn't fit, she had small hands, but she wanted him to have it. She had worn it every day since the very moment she bought it from an antique dealer. It was a rare stone long ago on earth, and now, it was incredibly difficult to even see one. "For you."

"You're welcome," he said, his voice low and quiet now. If he wasn't careful, even with the conversation they were having, he was going to doze off here with her under the stars. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing, but they'd wake up in the morning freezing cold and covered in dew - not exactly what he'd originally had in mind when he'd set all this up. He blinked a couple of times, stifling a yawn. Stay awake Luke. You can do it.
It had felt natural to show Ally the wristband, not some sort of grand gesture or big premeditated thing, he'd just wanted to. He trusted her and felt comfortable enough with her to talk about pretty much anything that came up. His Mom, out of all his family members, was the one he loved the most, there was no doubt about that. She was such a strong woman, full of life, but the cancer had left her tired and fragile for a while. They'd done a lot of talking around that time, and that's when they'd decided to give each other the bands. They both lived in hope that it would never come back.
Luke hadn't expected what came next. He felt Ally uncurl his fingers and looked down, watching her place her ring into the palm of his hand. For you. Staring at the ring for a moment, a smile crossed his face, "you're giving me a ring, huh?" he teased her lightly, propping the ring up between his thumb and forefinger to take a better look at it. "Are you sure?" he asked, looking down at her again.

Ally grinned, her grey eyes sparkling under the stars. Her own gesture had almost the same meaning. No they hadn't endured tragedy-yet- but she just wanted to give him something of hers other than, well her body. Not that he didn't enjoy that, but there was always a time and a place for things like that. Now, definitely was not. In case he ever had to leave for a mission, which would probably happen, or gone away on business, now he would have something to keep close and remember her by.
She wrapped her small hands around his, just to prove she was serious. "Of course I'm sure. Opal's are rare, just like me actually giving my heart to someone. So...yes....I'm very sure Luke Martin. So sure I am stupidly, head over heels in love with you." She sniffled, and sucked her bottom lip to keep from honestly crying. "More sure than I have ever been about anything else in the entire world. More sure than I could put a price on, or ever prove. You have no idea how sure I am. " By now, the tears were streaming down her face, as her heart opened up wider than it ever had before, In fact, it was almost stretched by her raw love and devotion for him. She hadn't expected to fall apart like this, but with him, her boundaries, fell, crumpled. This was more than a ring now, and she prayed he would know how she felt.

Luke looked down at her hands, which held his enclosed in their grasp, before bringing his green eyes to meet her blue ones - they were shining with tears. His heart felt like it was trying to beat it's way out of his ribcage, pounding stronger with every word that tumbled out of her mouth, the tears having broken free of her eyes, streaming a couse down her cheeks. She had just explained perfectly all the feelings that he knew he'd been having for her these past few months, and clearly, she felt the same way.
"Well, when you put it like that," he breathed, pulling her hands up to his mouth to press a gentle kiss to them, "how can a guy refuse?" Tugging his hands from hers, he kept the ring clasped tightly in his hand as he pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her, resting his chin on top of his head as they lay there together.
There were a few minutes of silence between them, Luke contemplating something quietly. Once the sniffling had stopped, Luke pulled away far enough to brush the stray hairs from her face, smiling at her. "I don't have anything tangible to give you in return," he told her, stroking a tear from her cheek with his thumb, "but, Alliana Porter, as far as I'm concerned, my heart is yours. One and whole. I know you'll take good care of it for me."

Ally crumpled into him as he wrapped his strong arms around her small form. She felt small, but it was okay for once. Her pride didn't exist right now. There was no selfishness, no ego, no restraints. She had exposed her heart to him, caving out everything she had held inside. Sure he knew she loved him, but now he knew how much. She would risk it all for him, and if it ever came down to it, she would risk her life. Her love had no boundaries for him now.
Luke kissed her hands and she curled further into him, burying her wet face into his shoulder as hit chin rested atop her head. She closed her eyes and listened to the sweet melody of his heartbeat. The one that beat for her. When he pulled away, she couldn't help but let the tears flow again, especially when he said his heart was fully hers. All of it. She choked a small laugh and sniffled, before pressing her hot lips against his. Her face was still wet and red with tears, but knowing Luke he probably wouldn't mind. She snaked her arms around the back of his neck, only pulling away to let a stupid laugh escape. 'And you have mine, all of it, for as long as I live. "
