~~~~~~ PERSONALITY[/b]
Personality:
Despite occasionally falling into fierce workaholic spells, Lani is a generally laid-back person. She loves spending time with friends, and is rarely ever shy when meeting someone new. In fact, more often than not she comes across as too forward, but she only ever has the best interests at heart. No matter how terribly she's feeling, or how bad a day she's had, she always has a smile to share. That said, Lani's also the kind of person who believes that trust must be earned, and not freely tossed about--if you lose it, you probably didn't deserve it in the first place.
~~~~~~ HISTORY[/b]
History:
Lani was born and raised in the costal town of Kalihiwai, Hawaii, in a safe and relatively carefree neighbourhood. As they lived by the ocean, most of her childhood was spent on the beach, either lounging around in the sand or out there on the water. She learned to swim almost before she could walk, and because of her father's profession she was surfing not long after that. She also expressed an interest in music from a young age, and thus was given her first ukulele at the age of six.
Luaus were another large part of her life. She loved the hula and fire dancing, the singing, and of course the food; but most of all, she loved the stories the elders--her grandmother Lilo among them--would tell. It was always thrilling to learn about her culture and heritage, especially when they told the legends of old. Often when she was sick, she would beg her parents to call her grandmother so that she could hear some of her favourite tales as she went to sleep.
Lani's childhood was spent happily oblivious to the rest of the multiverse, and it wasn't until she was sixteen that things changed. For her birthday, her mother Canna took her up to Princeville for the day. On their way home they stopped off at the grocery store--and that was where things went to hell. A band of robbers entered just as they were finishing up at the till. When they threatened to kill the cashier if she didn't hand over the money in the register, Canna had tried to stop them. They shot her down without a second thought
The only physical injury Lani sustained was a shot to the shoulder, which she received upon dropping to her knees next to her mother. She was untrained at the time, and as such she had no idea how to help. Canna ended up dying before the police and ambulance arrived. By that time, the robbers were long gone. That very moment, with her mother lying limply in her arms, Lani vowed to become a doctor, so as to make sure no one else ever had to watch a loved one die the way she just had. The day after her mother's funeral, she went out and got a tattoo of a canna flower to remember her by.
Due to her determination and dedication, Lani reached her goal of becoming a doctor at a younger age than most. When she was twenty-two, one of her professors sent a letter of recommendation to a UGAP funded hospital in Honolulu, and a few days later she received a fax offering her an internship for a year. The thought of training among professionals had Lani chomping at the bit, and when her father, Maleko, encouraged this, she was packed and ready to leave by the following morning.
After a little over a week in Honolulu, however, Lani found herself growing homesick. As she didn't want to return to Kalihiwai until her internship was complete, she decided that what she needed was a housemate, someone she could come back to when the work day was over. That was when she went on the lookout for a pet. She came across a fennec fox in a humane society that someone had brought in with a crippled leg, meaning it would never make it if they even considered setting it free. The pup stole her heart, and she adopted him on the spot, naming him Kapu. He's been her best friend ever since.
By the time her internship at the Honolulu hospital was up, Lani had not only made plenty of friends, but developed quite a name for herself. As a result of this, she was hired on full-time. UGAP was interested by what they heard about her, and they sent a specialist to observe her work. The reports the specialist sent back to them were quite satisfactory, and later that year they took her on as a Medical Officer aboard the Venia.
Random Facts:
.: she is fluent in ancient Hawaiian (considering the year Venia is based in, it's probably ancient, anyway)
.: unfortunately, her grandmother insisted she take hula-dancing lessons as a child; she's actually quite good, though she hates to admit it
.: she owns a male fennec fox named Kapu, and she--somehow--managed to smuggle him onboard (if that's all right)
