William muttered something incomprehensible under his breathe as he dropped the beam wrench onto the metal grating beneath him, staring at the very stubborn circuitry that made up the "mind" of the twin warp drives on the Venia. They had not been giving the pilot enough thrust to get through some of the more difficult regions of the universe, such as the vicious asteroid belts around the entrance to the Milky way or the black holes near the Kappa cluster. Two days ago, he was told to fix it.
Two days later, he had no answers. The circuits were in complete alignment! Some of these people on board really don't know their ships. Of course, most didn't have the kind of knowledge HE had, so he couldn't raise his standards too high. He was here to be the Chief Engineer, so they were to rely on him to fix major issues such as these. The officers in his command were not allowed into this section of the ship unless given proper clearance, which suited Will just fine. He knew he could fix this problem...or he thought he did. He examined the wires once more before blowing out a sigh, tapping his index and middle finger up to his ear to stimulate the communication system implanted in his ear, the nano machines installed in his body recognizing that he wanted to call Annabelle.
Hmph. Annabelle. She was quite pretty, he would give her that, but she was too reckless, too careless with her behavior. And she was the tactical leader of this ship? He grunted slightly as he spoke:
"Annabelle? Come down here please. I need to talk with you about the warp drive."

Annabelle had been in the gym on board, beating the hell out of the punching bag. It was turning out to be a long journey to Delta Prime, what with teasing problems with the ship's systems. She would have thought that they would have done rigorous tests before letting them fly off with the ship. But, then again, all the testing in the universe couldn't account for some problems; you could be told how to fly but beating your wings for the first time would always raise problems. It was the same with any ship.
The amount of frustrated grunts she'd heard coming from engineering had been increasing over the past couple of days. William Blake, no relation to the poet, had been trying to deal with a problem, and was struggling. She'd met him the first day on the ship, and within a minute or two they were already verbally sparring. If he wasn't such a know-it-all arse sometimes then she would have been able to admit he was good looking, handsome even. There was no point in making an enemy out of him though, that would make the next few years a living hell.
She heard his voice over her coms and grabbed the punching bag so that it stopped making a noise. She brought her fingers up to her ear so that she could respond. "You want to talk to me about the warp drive?" It was hard to keep the surprise out of her voice. "I'll be two minutes." She wasn't about to turn up in engineering drenched in sweat, now, was she?
After rubbing herself down with her towel, then applying deoderant, and pulling on a sweat shirt, she jogged down to engineering. "You called, good sir?" she said, looking around to see if she could find him.

Will pointed at the circuit board in a jerky manner, signaling he was a bit aggravated. He then spoke: "I don't know what you guys are talking about, but everything in here is in top shape. We didn't have much power to begin with! You think those dunderheads would give us a better vessel, but of course not. Save the human race in a junker." Will picked up the laser wrench he had dropped earlier and laid it on one of the nearby terminals, continuing: "I haven't heard anything going on topside for the past two days because I've been working down here." He turned around to face Annabelle as he asked: "Did I miss anything?"

Anna liked listening to him rant, he could rant with the best of them. She took pleasure in it as well, which helped... her anyway, it kept her amused. She snorted loudly at the 'save the human race in a junker' comment, and stopped herself from covering her nose, that'd be more embarrassing. "They couldn't very well send us to save the human race in a sardine can, now, could they?" she said, before walking over to him, having a look at the circuits. Frowning, wrinkling her nose in concentration, she pursed her lips. "Give me that," she said, taking the laser wrench from him. "You haven't missed much by the way. Just people killing time until this is fixed." A couple of minutes fiddling with something using the wrench, and they felt the ship jolt forwards, picking up the thrust it was supposed to have from the beginning. She smiled, closed the panel, then looked back round at him, holding out the wrench to him, "voila," she said. "There was a circuit board behind the metal exterior that wasn't aligned, but it's fixed now."

Will looked at Annabelle with a mix of contempt and admiration: contempt at the fact that she, a TACTICAL officer came down and did his job(which, by the way, he was pretty good at) and essentially made him look like he didn't know what he was doing. The admiration came at how quickly she was able to diagnose the problem and fix it in a time span of 120 seconds.
In essence, this was one of the few times that Will was speechless.
He took the wrench from her hands, attempting to hide a small smile as he responded: "Well then, I guess we can go on with our lives then. Delta Prime should be just around the corner eh?" He put the laser wrench in it's usual place(holstered around his waist like a firearm) and approached the main console located across the room. He couldn't help but ask: "Where did you learn those skills from anyway?"

Anna had to stop herself from clapping her hands together with glee at his silence. She'd never silenced him before. She almost wished she had a camera so she could take a picture of the look on his face, it was priceless. She'd have to take a still frame of the ship's security log later.
"Yep, you can actually get out of this place for the first time in two days," she said, glancing around, noting no empty plates or anything around the place, "have you been eating? You must be starving." She was pretty hungry herself after all that punching and kicking in the gym.
"Learn those skills? Pfft, I'm the master, a jedi of physics," she said, before saying seriously, "my Dad's cool logic and a degree from MIT." And natural aptitude of course, but she didn't want to rub it in too much. "You've been down here for two days staring at the thing, I don't blame you for missing it." That much time spent staring at anything could send a person crazy.

"MIT? I can't believe those guys are still around. What is it, 400 years and counting? They're so proud of themselves." Will pressed one of the three buttons on the terminal and a holographic model of the ship appeared in the center of the room, the model detailing every possible mechanical aspect of the ship and the status of each aspect. "The flux drives are working properly now, which is a miracle...and...I believe that's everything. Looks like we're running a lot smoother. Lets hope it stays that way." He said the last part with a bit of cynicism, seeing as he knew SOMETHING would HAVE to go wrong.
It always did.
"That's all I needed really. Thanks." He turned around to face the terminal again as his stomach growled...loudly. True, he hadn't been eating. She had him caught again. Two for two. She was good.
"Food sounds good."

"I know," she said as he talked about MIT, "the Professors are so old they're beginning to look like white shrivelled prunes hunched at the front, feebly attempting to bash the holographic board. I've seen one fall through it before." The last part was true, she had seen a lecturer fall through a holographic board, but she was pretty sure the Professors weren't 400 years old, although, you never knew in this day and age... Glancing at the model, she saw that he was right. But it was true, something was bound to go wrong sooner or later. "You're welcome," she said, and was about to leave when she heard his stomach rumble. She spun on her heel to look back round at him, and grin on her face. "To the mess hall!" she said, gesturing for him to go first. Continued here.
