Now that Anna had met the other crew members some of the nervous butterflies in her stomach had subsided. They all seemed like likeable people at the top of their game. The smartest of the smart all on one ship; this was going to be interesting. She could see a lot of debates and battles of wit in her future. After the meeting, they had all gone to unpack their stuff in their quarters. Anna found hers fairly easily and ran her hand over the panel on the outside of the door to make it open. She loved that system. It recognised DNA and only allowed people with DNA registered to the ship to enter unless she set it so only she could enter. She hadn’t had it at home, but the campus she’d went to had them for the lecture halls to help record attendance. It was a good idea and it worked.
It took her about half an hour to put all her clothes in the cupboard provided and laid out her various photographs around the room. She also had an old style Polaroid camera with film, and she had every intention of taking photos of the crew to keep or put up in her room. She took off her bracelets and necklace, considering taking off her jacket as well. It was a bit bright in comparison to what the other crew members had turned up in. Eventually she shrugged the jacket off, leaving it on the bed, then once she was sure everything was as it should be, and had her bag stuffed away, she set off to explore the ship. It would be another couple of hours before they were ready to set out into space.
Anna checked out the Lab and Medical Bay before eventually making her way to the Mess Hall. It was so strange that everything was empty. She was used to people bustling around her all the time, and even though there were a fair few people on the ship, they were probably all still unpacking or something. She looked around the mess hall, biting her lip. Her stomach grumbled and she decided she might as well grab something to eat while she was here. There were a couple of bio-synthesisers on the wall, and she grinned, heading over to it. She’d only ever used ones which gave army rations on training exercises, so using one which would make anything she wanted would be fun. ”What to order,” she thought out loud, pretending to stroke her chin. ”Hmmmm.”

Jack had arrived on the Venia about thirty minutes after everyone else. Running late wasn't something he did often, but settling Anthony into his parents place had taken longer than he had expected. Finally, after promising his son that he would bring him something back he had stopped crying and let him go. Kissing him on the cheek and hugging him tight before he left, Jack made the long trip to the Venia and climbed aboard.
He didn't immediately go to the flight deck to check up on things, but took a round about way to the mess hall to find something to eat. He had skipped breakfast this morning because of all of the packing to be done. He hadn't realized just how hungry he was then, but he was starving now. He couldn't get to the mess hall fast enough.
When he entered it was to find only one woman standing there waiting to order. He watched her for moment and then smiled to himself. She looked very peculiar standing there scratching her chin in thought. He'd seen people do that in movies, but never in person. It was rather amusing.
Walking over to her, he stopped at her side and then smiled down at her. "I can help you to decide if you'd like." The offer was made in jest, but he was willing to help if she needed it, though he was pretty sure she didn't.

What was it about guys on this ship sneaking up on her? She swore, if she jumped in shock one more time she was going to have a heart attack. Or, she was going to have to get hearing aids in order to help her hear them approaching, in order to prevent the problematic heart attack. She wasn't as startled this time, and so managed to keep her composure a little more than she had with the Captain.
"I don't know," she said, dropping her hand to her side, looking at him, "if you have good taste in food, then you can recommend something." She smirked, "go ahead, make a suggestion, and I'll see what I think."
"Oh, I'm Anna by the way," she said, bypassing the whole 'I'm Annabelle but call me Anna thing', she'd said it enough today. "The tactical officer, and you are?" Knowing her luck he'd be the Captain's superior or something silly like that, and she'd probably just made an ass of herself. That wouldn't be surprisingly. He'd been the jestful one first, so hopefully he'd take her response that way too.

"I dont know about taste in good food," Jack said, smiling widely at her. "Unless peanuts and beer is your idea of fine cuisine." He was joking of course, although he could use a beer to calm his nerves. He always did get a bit nervous before starting something new.
"Jack Johnson, first mate." He hated the sound of first mate. He thought it made him sound gay. He was far from it, though he was sure a few of his more 'free spirited' male collegues would have loved for him to test those waters. He wasn't going about to.
"How about something Italian, eh? Chicken tetrazzini perhaps." He turned and ordered that for himself along with something strong to drink." The smell filled the mess hall and he could feel his mouth water. "It's very good. You should try it."
Giving her a teasing smile, he made his way over to a table and took a seat. It would be her decision to join him if she chose to.

Anna let out a laugh at his reply, it was a good comeback, she liked that. "I suppose it's better than that of most men," she said, "you know, as opposed to whatever they can find down the back of the sofa and whatever is left in the fridge." She grinned right back at him. If he could dish it, now she could see it he could take it.
"First mate?" Anna said. Well, if she hadn't made an idiot of herself by now, she was about to, "Sort of sounds like we're all on a pirate ship," she said, "or kind of like a make of condom." Wow. First day and she was making crude jokes with the second in command. This was going well. He could either find it amusing, and this could be the start of a beautiful friendship, or it was going to go really bad, and she'd have to hide in her quarters for a week.
"Chicken tetrazzini," she repeated. She watched as he ordered it and it appeared. It smelt good and it looked tasty, that was good enough for her. Her stomach grumbled and she quickly ordered the meal, and a beer, seeing as he was drinking too.
"Whoever programmed this thing to make alcohol was a saint," she grinned as she grabbed her meal and sat down at the table with him. "So, I didn't see you at the meet and greet thing before..." she said, picking up her fork and taking a bite. The rest of her sentence dissolved into an 'mmmmmm'.

Jack was glad that she took the opportunity to join him. He wasn't the captain of the ship, but he knew many people did not like to chat with their bosses. He was happy to see that Anna wasn't the type to hop on the bandwagon.
"So, I didn't see you at the meet and greet thing before..."
Ah yes, the meeting. "No, I was with my son getting him settled in with my parents. He didn't take the seperation too well," he admitted frowning a bit as he thought about his son in tears. He had smiled right before he left though, so he prayed that he was okay. "I'm sure'll be okay though. At least I hope so..." He shifted his food about his plate and decided to change the subject before he did something ridiculous like run back home to his son.
"So, did Michael bore you with a welcoming speech or did he do that dance he promised he'd perform for yo guys?" He joked before taking a bit of his pasta. He was very delicious. He drank a bit of his beverage while he waited for her to answer. She would either play along or take offense. Either way, her answer would tell him a lot about her personality.

Anna hadn't realised he was a Dad until he'd said about his son. That must have been hard, leaving his son behind, she didn't know that if she had kids that she'd be able to travel off into space, leaving them behind. "I'm not surprised, poor guy," she said, "he'll be fine though, and you know, you'll have loads of great stories to back to him with at the end of this." She gave him a smile.
She snorted with laughter, "he told you about the dance, huh?" she said, playing along, "it was sort of a mixture of the YMCA and the macarena, never seen anything quite like it." She took another bite of her food, then swallowed and said in hushed tones, "don't know whether I'd want to see it again." Her face broke out into a grin. It was nice finding someone with a good sense of humour on the first day, hopefully it was a sign of good things to come.
"How did you get involved in this then?" she asked, continuing to eat, "was it a surprise call from a government official like the rest of us?" She hadn't met anyone so far who had been involved in the project further back than that. There had to be someone on board who knew something more.

She was right. His son would do fine without his. His father was amazing. He would keep his busy. There was always something around their house to fix or stories about the old days to tell. They'd have no problem keeping this three year old entertained.
"I guess you didn't see the chicken dance interlude. That's the best part." He chuckled to himself. He liked this Anna. She could keep the conversation moving which was awesome in and of itself. Besides, she wasn't hard to look at. Another plus in his book.
"Actually I've been indirectly involved for a few years now. I only observed back then though. The problem wasn't as large as it is now as you can imagine." He took another bite of his food, savoring the taste and the fullness that followed.
"How much did they tell you after you were recruited?" He wanted to know just what she knew so they could start working on a viable solution. It was a small start, but they had to begin somewhere.

Anna laughed out loud. This conversation was becoming more crazy by the moment, and she was loving it. "Ahh, shucks," she said, "I'll have to ask him to show me at some point. Maybe when there's a bit more of an audience around. Maybe we can clap along with him, or get a mexican wave going on the flight deck." She could probably keep this line of conversation going forever if he kept playing along with her.
"Oh really?" she said, suddenly very interested. So, he did know more than everyone else on board; at least someone did. "Yeah," she said, "otherwise they probably would have done something about it sooner instead of waiting for it to get out of control like this." The government always kept things a secret until they couldn't anymore, that was the way they worked.
"Not much," she admitted, "the ones of us that could understand physics got a folder with a few sheets of information in it, I'd imagine others got less. We also got a small briefing on what we would be required to do, rules and regulations etcetera. Nothing that useful or informative." Anything he could tell her would probably be news to her.
