Personality:
First and foremost, Darcy is a very intelligent woman. She's not to be underestimated when it comes to anything to do with smarts, including her sense of wit and humour. She can be very cutting when she needs to be, and especially if someone puts her down. She has a healthy amount of self-confidence - not overbearing and egotistical, but enough to know that she can do whatever she puts her mind to.
Darcy is also very practical. She has a good work ethic, she's very neat, tidy, and organised. She hasn't got OCD, but she does prefer things to be where she leaves them. She's proud of the career that she has made for herself, and puts a lot of effort into her work. She nearly always has to be doing something with herself, she doesn't take a lot of down time - only when she finds something meaningful to do, or to read.
The only thing she can be frivolous over is buying stuff. Mostly, she buys books and things to further her work, but she can indulge in spending sprees on clothes - she likes to present herself in a sophisticated way. If you find her slobbing around in sweats, then you know something's wrong.

History:
Darcy was a child prodigy; the benefit of inheriting the brains of a genius. After she had walking and talking down, she quickly progressed in her learning, able to count from 1 to 100 before she was two. Reading came naturally to her, and she was pulling out her father's books on micro-biology and chemistry from the bottom shelf and reading words from them before she even started school - not that she understood any of them, but it was an impressive feat all the same.
Throughout school, there was almost a duality to Darcy, this came about because she loved two things that were completely different to one another; science and drama. With extra tuition from her father, she flew through the grades, starting work for University before she'd even left school. She finished her Doctorate in Medical Science in time for her twenty-first birthday, and after two years of practical work at the state of the art medical centre in Vancouver, she went back to school to do a further course in Neurology, her chosen field of interest.
Drama was a big part of her life up until she graduated from high school. The subject, and her love for it, was a big bug-bear for her father. He wanted her to concentrate all her efforts on her sciences, but she loved the person she could be on stage, the confidence that she felt while she was delivering her lines, and of course, the raucous applause at the end helped to stroke her ego somewhat. Unfortunately, although she was still interested in the subject, it fell by the wayside after high school, and she hasn't revisited it since.
After securing a job at the UGAP's medical facility on New Earth, she found herself lonely. Despite whatever looks she had, male suitors were sparce, and she wanted someone to spend her time with - without having to buy a pet. A orphaned teenage girl, Casey, was brought into the facility having suffered a severe brain trauma. By some miracle, and Darcy's hard work, Casey was nursed back to full health. When Darcy learned that Casey had nowhere or no one to go back to, she offered to take the girl in, and adopted her. They've been like sisters ever since.
Casey, who was thirteen at the time, was intensely interested in food. Darcy let her experiment in the kitchen all the time, and they often went on holidays back to places on Earth to try the different foods and experience the different cultures. When Casey graduated from High School and went off to college to study Culinary Arts, Darcy was at a bit of a loss again, but then the UGAP offered her the position of a medical officer on board the Venia, and she decided to take it.
Since then she's got married to Hugo Douglass, who she loves dearly, and has gained a stepdaughter, Lisa, who is adorable.
Random Facts:
# Her father was South African, so she has a slight South African accent mixed in with her Canadian one.
# She never knew her mother: her mother was one of her father's close friends, and when he expressed his wish to finally have children, she became a surrogate mother for Darcy, although she never had a romantic relationship with Frank, and never expressed any wishes to see her daughter after she was born.
# As well as being interested in the medical/biological aspects of the brain, she also enjoys reading about the psychology aspects.
# She helped out with a couple of Casey's school plays, and still misses acting herself.
# Whenever she's not working, she enjoys visiting the theatre with friends.
