Venia ~ Late September
It had been nearly three weeks since Lizzy had last seen Will talk to Natalie at all, and vice versa. Now, she knew he wasn't good when it came to making mistakes, owning up to them, and fixing them (when it came to people anyway), but she thought that with loving Natalie the way he obviously did, he would have done something by now. She'd checked up on him when it had first happened, and he'd been a wreck. Surely he had the wherewithal by now to get up off his butt and do something about it.
Despite the fact that she'd thought anything and everything was done between them when she'd stormed out of his dorm room that day, she still cared for him, she was still his friend, so if he wasn't going to do anything of his own accord, she was going to prod him into action. She wouldn't let him ruin another relationship.
Knocking on the door to his office, Lizzy didn't get any reply. So, after a moment of waiting, she pushed open the door and found him sat at his desk, face down on the plastic surface. "Will," she said, closing the door behind her as she walked over to the desk, her hands on her hips. No response, but his eyelids flickered. "Will."
He moaned but didn't move. Striding round behind him, she slapped him over the back of the head, which made him sit bolt upright then groan in pain, cradling his head. "What was that for?"
"For being an ass."
"I'm always an arse," he said, rubbing the spot where she'd slapped him, looking round and up at her. He didn't know what she was doing, barging in here and hitting him like that. Other than being Lizzy, of course.
"No, you're not," she countered, "not always. But you're being one now, by not doing anything about you and Natalie."
Will fell quiet. "I don't know what I can do."
"Well, you can begin actually trying, for starters."
"I haven't just been sitting in here doing nothing," he said indignantly, finally letting go of his head, "I've been trying to think of something, but nothing seems like it'll be enough."
"Have you tried simply apologising?"
"I did that straight away, nothing."
Lizzy took a breath, trying to think for a moment before leaning against the edge of his desk. "How long have you been seeing each other for?"
"A couple of months, give or take."
"Okay, so, she already knows you well enough by now to know that one, you're not exactly shy when it comes to women, and two, you can lie like a con man."
Will raised his eyebrows at her. Really? Was he really that transparent?
"So, you've got to do something to earn her trust back. Show her that you're willing to go to great lengths to earn her forgiveness. Which you are, right?"
"Short of a Romeo and Juliet style death scene, yes. Anything."
Now Lizzy had to think properly. What would she have fallen for all those years ago if Will hadn't ballsed things up and not come after her? It had to be a grand gesture, to be sure. Something embarrassing, he'd had to sacrifice his pride in order to do this. But what?
"Well, you're nimble on your feet," she pointed out.
"I can exactly free run around this ship to win her back, that's not going to impress her."
"Of course not. I was thinking more along the lines of... dancing."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, coupled with some good music, maybe a bit of singing, you can't go wrong." It would have worked for her at any rate.
At first he wasn't sure he was hearing her properly. Singing and dancing, what? But then he began to think of all the classical films over the past however many years where the male lead burst into song around his female counterpart, and she'd fallen head over heels. Plus, he'd already danced with Natalie twice... wait, three times already, it was almost a thing for them. Maybe she was right, maybe that would work.
"If you did it in engineering with an audience, including Natalie of course, I'm pretty sure that would prove that you are willing to make a complete fool of yourself for her."
Will nodded slowly, rising to his feet, she was right. It was a great idea, and he was surprised he hadn't come up with it himself. There was something that he wanted to know first though. "Why are you doing this?"
She should have known that question was going to come up. "Because, Will, despite whatever has happened in the past, you're still my friend. Natalie is a good person, and you love her. You deserve to be happy."
A smile crept onto his face for the first time in weeks. "Thanks Liz," he said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "For the record, I am sorry about what I did back then. You deserved better."
She shrugged her shoulder gently, patting his arm. "It's in the past now, we both moved on," she said, "you just concentrate on getting Natalie back, okay? Then getting back to work. We need you out there shouting at people, keeping the ship in order. It's too quiet."
"Will do," he said, before adding with a slight smirk, "ma'am."
Lizzy shook her head and sighed, his arm releasing her shoulder. "Get plotting," she told him, "make it count. And make sure I'm on shift when it happens, I don't want to miss the big show."
Will chuckled, "got it."
